Widespread Mobile Service Disruptions Reported Across the US
There have been reports of extensive disruptions to cell services nationwide on Thursday morning, impacting thousands of subscribers. Since 04:00 EST (09:00 GMT), users of multiple networks have reported a large increase in disruptions to Downdetector.com, a portal that tracks service failures.
Downdetector indicates that AT&T is the most affected network, especially in hotspot areas in the east and south. On their phones, users have reported seeing an SOS message that prevents them from making calls or accessing necessary services.
The BBC has contacted a number of operators to request comment, but it is yet unclear what specifically caused the outages. Verizon, one of the networks cited, told the BBC that their network is operating correctly despite claims on Downdetector. It implied that clients may be having trouble establishing connections with others on different networks.
Although AT&T is constantly responding to online concerns from customers, the network problems have not yet received widespread recognition. In addition, customers of Consumer Cellular, T-Mobile, Cricket Wireless, and UScellular have all reported service interruptions.
The issues that have been reported cover a wide range of mobile usage issues, such as calls, messages, and internet connection issues. The majority of consumers have complained about either not getting any service or signal. Major cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta are among the places with the greatest amount of outages, as shown by the heatmap created by Downdetector.
Moreover, certain areas have had problems with the 911 emergency service, leading authorities to recommend using landlines, social media, or cell phones with other carriers in an emergency. The circumstance emphasizes how important it is to have trustworthy channels of communication, particularly in emergency situations.
